“Teachers can open the doors but you must enter by yourself…”
This proverb speaks umpteen truths. Good teachers are important to us as they can help shape our lives, they can also be detrimental to our lives like any authority figure.
They teach us! They instruct us! They guide us!
But they don't do stuff for us nor should they. It is up to us to enter the doors they open for us.
Learning is a lifelong process and it can help move forward a stone's throw or a giant leap. So it is natural for us to seek out those that can help us either directly or through inspiration.
I have had many teachers through the years in elementary, High school; college, dance class and other areas. All have taught me great things. However, none of them have taken me through the door. I had to enter on my own and with the lesson I learned, apply them to get to where I am today.
You must have undoubtedly heard the old saying:
“You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.”
It means a teacher can lead you to water but you must drink it yourself. A teacher can open the door but you still need to enter through. Don't forget your potentials because of your own insecurities. By nature, humans are uneven. We excel at some things, but not at others. There are probably areas where you don’t even wait for a teacher to open the door, but instead, kick it open yourself and charge through. There are probably a few other places where you are much more likely to just look out the window.
“TEACHERS OPEN THE DOOR FOR YOU.”
It also lets you know that you must enter by yourself no one can make you cross the threshold.
